Are you LinkedIN yet?

The mantra of all career counselors’ is to "build a network". LinkedIn is
based on the idea of six degrees of separation and allows you to build a network
via introductions from your contacts and their contacts....online.
MySpace and Facebook are popular social networking sites that you've probably heard of, but the sites that focus
solely on business - are also being used in record numbers. LinkedIn is one such site,
which currently reports having reached 27 million users at the beginning of September, with
a new member joining ever two seconds. Are you LinkedIn yet? When joining you will
create a profile which resembles an online resume. You then establish links with current
and former colleagues, business acquaintances, friends and family... and then expand your
network to the contacts of your contacts. It also allows you to give and receive recommendations
with contacts.
Experts say that an essential tool in the today's business world is having a professional
online presence. According to a November 2007 survey by Vault, 44% of employers now
use online networking sites to examine the profiles of job candidates. And 39% report looking
at profiles of its current employees.
Why would you want an online profile?
- Gain an introduction to someone you wish to know through a trusted mutual contact.
- Find jobs, people and business opportunities recommended by someone in one's contact network.
- Employers can list jobs and search for potential candidates.
- Job seekers can review the profile of hiring managers and discover which of their existing
contacts can introduce them.
- Find potential clients.
- Ask industry experts questions that will help further your career or business.
LinkedIn offers a free account and two paid-for accounts…..visit their site and take
a look around...at the very least you might reconnect with a former colleague or friend.
