The
Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection states that
"computers, televisions and other electronic equipment are one of the
fastest growing portions of our waste stream"
Disposal
of computer equipment is important because electronics contain hazardous
materials such as beryllium, mercury, cadmium, nickel, zinc, silver,
gold, cadmium , and mercury. If placed in a landfill, they
pose environmental
risks,
potentially polluting the soil, air and water supply. Not to
mention the fact that we are running our of space in our landfills.
Electronics recyclers disassemble computers and computer equipment and
reuse or recycle the materials.
It is
estimated that
Between 1997 and 2007, nearly 500 million personal computers will become
obsolete - that's almost two computers for each person in the United
States.
Why
so many? Well, the numbers are increasing as our dependence on
them increases and because the lifespan of these devices has decreased.
The importance of reusing or recycling these components becomes critical
for the future of our planet.
Here at Network-IT we try to do our part.
We have partnered with a local company that disassembles computer and
computer equipment for reuse or recycling. They ship monitors and
keyboards to third world countries, and reuse the materials for resale.
They reuse 99.99% of the materials the receive, including the wires and
screws! The scrap metal and plastic that can't be used it brought
to a recyclers in the area.
